Hungarian Hospitality Begins with a Greeting

The last time I visited Budapest, my Hungarian was very broken. Over the years, I had lost touch with all my Hungarian-speaking friends and family, and this made me very shy to speak the language. But I soon learned something remarkable about Hungary: people are incredibly warm and welcoming when you make even the smallest effort to speak their language. I really wished that I was better prepared a list of Hungarian Travel Phrases.

I remember one moment on a city bus, where I boarded silently and offered no greeting. The driver didn’t scold me, but he made a gentle remark that, in Hungary, it’s polite to say “Good day” when stepping onto a bus. He wasn’t upset—he was helping me understand something meaningful. That simple phrase, “Jó napot kívánok,” meant more than just hello. It was a gesture of respect and connection.

As I traveled through the country, I found this to be true everywhere—from restaurants and shops to train stations and market stalls. Hungarians deeply value politeness, and it often starts with a greeting.

Hungarian Travel Phrases Tool

I created this phrase tool to help travelers and guests in Hungary learn the most essential and polite Hungarian expressions, with correct pronunciation and real spoken examples. Whether you’re trying to order lunch, catch a taxi, or simply say thank you, the smallest efforts go a long way here.

So, before you board the tram, step into a café, or start your next Hungarian adventure—start with a greeting.

💡 Tip: Understanding Hungarian Suffixes in the Hungarian Travel Phrase Tool

In Hungarian, you might see endings like -hoz / -hez / -höz or -ba / -be at the end of travel-related phrases. These change based on the word they follow, using a rule called vowel harmony.

You don’t need to memorize the rules — just be aware that the ending might shift depending on where you’re going. Hungarians will understand you even if you guess!

Example 1:
Meg tudná mondani, hogyan jutok el …hoz/hez/höz?
Going to the station (állomás)? Say: állomáshoz.

Example 2:
Melyik busz megy …ba/be?
Going to the city (város)? Say: városba.

These endings help your speech sound more natural — but don’t worry about being perfect. Just try, and you’ll be appreciated!

💡 Tip: Hungarian Has Two Kinds of “You”

In Hungarian, there’s a difference between formal and informal speech — and you’ll hear different words depending on who you’re talking to.

The phrase tool mostly uses the polite, formal version (because that’s safest with strangers, cashiers, and service staff). For example, “Could you help me?” is translated in the respectful form.

Don’t stress over it — most locals appreciate any effort to speak Hungarian. Using the polite version is always a good choice when you’re unsure!

💡 Cultural Tips for Everyday Politeness
  • Jó napot kívánok (“Good day”) is more than a greeting — it opens doors to kindness. Even supermarket cashiers expect it!
  • Elnézést (“Excuse me”) softens requests and makes interactions more respectful — use it before asking for help or squeezing past someone.
  • It’s common to say “thank you” twice: once when receiving something, and again when leaving. Don’t worry — it’s always appreciated!
💡 Visiting a Thermal Bath?

Hungary’s famous thermal baths are relaxing, rejuvenating — and rich with tradition! But did you know:

  • You’re expected to shower before entering the pools.
  • Wearing flip-flops is not optional — it’s considered hygienic etiquette.
  • Most saunas are co-ed and towel-only — no swimsuits allowed inside!
